It's hard to see this war ending with a peace agreement anytime soon. It will be a long diplomatic journey. Much more likely, some form of frozen conflict, similar to agreeing on an armistice, could take shape; after that, the preservation of Ukraine's combat power will be crucial.
One aspect of the spiral of war is that it can occur regardless of the will of the participants, as a simple result of their interaction. A major war may break out inadvertently, because the concatenation of threats, responses, retaliation, leads the contenders where they did not think they would go.

The war without adjectives, made of large armies aiming at military victory, is back in Europe. Both the West and the Russians have realized this, but for now only the latter are willing to face it (and thus win it).
